The Quarter Life Chronicles

Stuck... 10/14/2008

I almost got stuck in the elevator at work today.  The worst part is that I was alone at the time.  Even worse, I didn't have my cell phone with me.

I had been working at my desk in the basement but needed to go upstairs to put some files away and get some lunch.  My arms were full of said files and I got on the small elevator to make the quick journey upstairs.  I was halfway upstairs when the elevator just stops....a few feet shy of reaching it's mark.

I pushed the button in an attempt to make it move upwards to complete it's ascent but it would not budge.  I pushed the down button in hopes that perhaps it would go down.  No luck.

I began to panic slightly and the bundle of files fell to the ground.  I pulled myself together a bit and attempted to get the elevator to move again.  Once again the elevator refused to finish going upwards, but this time I was able to get the machine to go down...and once it reached the bottom I was able to go up.

I've always been weary of that elevator.  I remember the day I was interviewed for the job I had to ride on that machine and had the sinking feeling that at some point I'd get stuck on that thing.

If all else failed, you could've pressed the emergency button. Sounds like a freaky experience, though!

I almost fell down an escalator once, so for awhile I avoided all escalators.

Oh dear ... that could have been bad, especially without your cell phone on you and considering you were going TO lunch!

Glad to hear it finally worked out for the best.

Oh how awful. Elevators (or lifts as we call them :-) ) are such scary things. And you know of course that generally speaking cell phones don't work in elevators.

You handled that WAY better than I ever would have.

That is one of my BIGGEST fears of all times. There would have been a lot of crying and hyperventilating followed by fainting had I been in that elevator.

Thankfully YOU are OKAY.

*whew*

That would have freaked the living daylights out of me. I hate elevators!

Not a nice experience at all. I would start using the stairs and count it as exercise.

I also don't like elevators and what bothers me even more is when buildings don't even offer the option to take the stairs.

Well, finally I am unstuck. I have internet. I am in my new home just minutes from work. AND, I finally got my feed reader to recognize and subscribe to your blog! Yay!

Glad you aren't wasting away in some tiny cramped elevator.

I got stuck in an elevator alone once. It was hot and no air conditioning..lasted about 20 minutes.

Glad you are ok.
