Debates... 10/08/2008

I made the mistake of watching the Presidential Debates last night.  I've purposely kept myself from getting too involved in the elections this year, so I guess I was caught off guard when I finally caved in and began paying attention.  These things have become so petty nowadays.  Instead of putting the energy into building up good arguments as to why THEY are the best candidate for the job-the candidates are more concerned with making the other one look bad.  Frankly, instead of being able to take the debate seriously-I ended up feeling the need to view it as a comedy sketch.  It was totally ridiculous.  Granted, it did not dissuade me away from my candidate of choice as he did seem to bring up many good points and plans of action-but I honestly felt the debate was a total waste of time and energy for everyone involved.  One can only hope that sometime soon the Presidential Race will be turned around and better rules of conduct are brought in.

Another thought that started to form while the debate was going on is how much this country needs another FDR.  Granted, I was never the brightest history student...but I do recall spending a good portion of time learning about Franklin D. Roosevelt.  Considering he was elected President four times in a row (and the reason why there's a two term limit now)...he must have been doing something right during those 12+* years he resided in the White House.    Without breaking out the history books I do recall that in order to pull the US out of the Great Depression he created many governmental programs to get people back into the work force.  He put rules into place to make banks safe again.  He created Social Security...amongst other programs.  During World War ll the War was not just fought in Europe and Asia...EVERYONE was involved in the war effort...whether it was in the front lines, working in factories, rationing, collecting tin...whether the contribution was little or big, everyone pitched in and thus, it united our country in a way that I don't believe was ever seen again until perhaps 9/11.

While our country isn't in as dire straights as we were back then, we're heading in that direction.  We're facing seriously financial problems.  We're already involved in wars (which could very well escalate).  The difference is is that we're not being ruled by the type of government that was in place back then.  We're not being backed by a President as strong as Franklin D. Roosevelt.

I think that in order for this Election to become successful and worthwhile, the candidates should seriously consider the work that FDR did during his time as President.  It is time to once again unite our country and prove that we are in fact worthy of our status.

There is not a single word in this post that I would disagree with. I am so tired of the negative politicking that I could scream and can only shake my head and think "Yep, this explains why so many other countries hate us and are loving seeing us fall on our face right now."

I wish that someone had cloned FDR.

Great to see you stepping into the political arena with this post, Sil.

I also can't abide it when candidates take cheap shots at the other. Independents are also turned off by it as well (see the CNN moment-by-moment tracker that runs at the bottom of the screen during the debates).

With any luck, January of '09 will be the beginning of a bright new future for our country. :)

You bring up some good points.. The thing is.. that most elections are like this nowadays.. even here it is about browbeating the other person or it resorts to name calling and bad mouthing the candidate.. That has been the way for many years .. it also seems the only way for these candidates to get more votes.. it would be nice to see someone do the right thing while president.

It's bizarre; in poll after poll, the public say they don't like negative campaigning, and yet the politicians just can't help themselves.

I came by to catch up on your blog. Interesting to come here and find talk of politics.

You are right about the approach in the debates and campaigns. They are in the phase of attacking one another instead of talking about their own politics. I read somewhere that the last 5 days of the campaign are like "a knife fight in a phone booth".

How true, how true.

I loved this post! I thought earlier this year that, rather than send us each an incentive check, FDR would have used that money to fund some high-profile infrastructure projects ... highways, bridges, etc. You know, putting people to work in a visible, meaningful way and that would make everyone feel better about the economy and the direction the country was moving in. Like Kennedy, FDR got the power of engaging and enthusing our citizens.

I hated the debate, but alas, once one side goes negative, the other side has to, also. Taking the high road, letting those awful "Swiftboat" go unanswered, left John Kerry in the Senate.

I missed the debate because I was @ work/in transit from work. While it seems they had a moment of adult behavior suspending their ads on 9/11, it's a shame they can't seem to keep that up.
You make very good points. From the regular-people standpoint, we can only hope our future Great Leader will work in a responsible manner...

I cant even.

The ONLY thing getting ME through the rest of the election season is Tina Fey impersonating Sara Palin.

My Two Cents:
FDR???? More socialism??? Bigger government??? That's what FDR did to us, led us down the slippery socialist slope. There's already no aspect of our lives that the government doesn't have a say, or a tax - why should we ask for more?
End of My Two Cents.

Happy Friday!!! :)

I wasn't interested in the debate because I'm Canadian. Have a great weekend buddy!

Yeah politicians do love to slag each other off. It's because they think we're not paying attention (which I'm sure a lot of people aren't) and can't see the other guy's bad points already.

An interesting and informative post. I think negative politics seems to be the fashion whatever country you go. Instead of clarifying what their party is planning to do they keep sniping at each other and some of it are really low blows. It always seems that one is forced to select the lesser of two evils rather than have real confidence in whomever one votes for. We in Canada vote of Tuesday and although I have decided what I am going to do it is not with much confidence but the other party looks worse.

I just got off the phone with my mom and we were talking about much the same as what I read here.

Have any of us actually seen one, just one, commercial where the opponent's shortcoming are not the focus???

I don't want to hear that. It's mostly spin anyway. I want to hear what THEY themselves are going to do.

I have watched all the debates, and will watch the last one this Wednesday.. but I think the last one was awful. Poorly organized to start with, then poorly executed during.
