The Quarter Life Chronicles

Before I moved, my mother made a comment that she bet that I would lose weight when I moved out...not exactly sure what she implied, but the comment stuck with me.

I hate to admit this, but it seems as though the opposite is true.  It seems lately that I've become extremely lazy with exercising...out of control with my eating habits and using extremely bad judgment with what I eat.  It doesn't help either that my roommate and I end up going out to eat...a lot.  This weekend alone we went out for a late meal then drinking on Friday night, went out to dinner on Saturday and breakfast today (Sunday).  Since we don't often eat here at the house there's not always "healthy" foods that are easily accessible and so I find myself snacking on junk when I'm at home...considering the fact I rarely eat lunch at work, by the time I get home I head straight for the junk to tide me over until dinner (and no, I do not buy the junk so it's not just a matter of NOT buying it).

I'm discouraged.  While I haven't gained enough to have to go back up a size in jeans-I feel and see that I'm getting a bit too flabby.  I'm leaning towards wearing baggy clothing again in an attempt to hide the fact that I'm gaining weight.

So I guess it's time to really start pushing myself to take better care of myself.  I've got to convince my roommate that it's just not a good idea to constantly go out to eat, I've got to actually go to the grocery store and pick up healthy snacks to have around the house and try to find the time to actually cook a meal or two a week.  I've got to take the half hour a night to exercise.  I've got to start packing a (healthy) lunch to bring to work so that when I get done work I'm not tempted to stop at a fast food joint for something to eat.

I'm not going to put a set weight that I want to lose.  I just know that I'll feel better once I begin to eat healthier, get some regular exercise and stop eating out all the time and just leave that for special occasions.

Oh, can I ever relate to this post! It's so hard to watch what you eat when you spend so much time at work! There's a great little paperback called "Eat This, Not That." I believe they have a website, too. Anyway, the authors offer up painless way to decrease your fat and calorie intake, even if your lunchtime choice comes down to Burger King or McDonald's. (Of course, packing a salad is more economical and healthier, but sometimes life just doesn't allow for it.)

Eating out will always pack on the weight. I am gaining, too. I eat two meals a day away from home. Even if one chooses wisely in a restaurant, say salad instead of potatoes and gravy, they still pile on the calories in other ways (chips, croutons, over abundant salad dressings, etc.)

I am loving your new website!!! I love the red. I cannot seem to lose weight no matter what I do. We eat out too much and I know that puts the weight on.

At least you are aware of the situation and plan on doing something about it

Could you convince your roomie to buy non-junk food? I have the same problem ... if its accessible I will eat it.. Not always a whole box of cookies or chips, but I know they are there and will eat them.. Buying fruits and veggies for snacking on might help you.. Hope you get to talk to your roomie.. If she/he will at least go along with not buying junk for awhile..Hugs!

I've also put on a few of late and it's quite a dilemma I have between just wanting to pig out or try to get it under control.

Yesterday I did quite well, walking 78 minutes on the treadmill while watcing "Mad Men". Wishing you all the best on this, Sil.

Yeah you either loss weight or gain it when you move out on your own. I gained weight when I did...too much take out food, didn't want to cook a meal just for me so I would eat out.

I'd say I probably lost weight when I moved out. But that was because I was able to buy in all the foods I wanted and cook up healthier meals - I'm always more inclined to cook healthy meals when I'm cooking for more people than just myself. So now whenever on the rare occasion I get to cook just for me I eat junk ;)

Good luck with trying to lose the weight. Remember though that a little meat on the bones is a good thing ;)

Fruits are the best. You almost can eat as many as you want without putting on weight. Well, at least that's what I do.;-)

Good luck with it.
